UPDATE AS OF NOV. 2 from Apple: https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/24/here-are-the-cars-that-support-iphone-8-and-iphone-x-wireless-charging/
2017 Chevrolet vehicles and previous years with wireless charging capability use a standard that is not compatible with the new iPhone 8. 2018 and newer Chevrolet vehicles now have this fixed and support the iPhone 8 wireless charging feature.
The following vehicles (as confirmed from GM) are compatible with the iPhone 8 Wireless Charging
- 2018 Buick Enclave
- 2018 Cadillac Escalade
- 2018 Chevrolet Bolt
- 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe
- 2018 Chevrolet Silverado LD/HD
- 2018 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2018 GMC Terrain
- 2018 GMC Yukon
- 2018 GMC Sierra LD/HD
I have had two encounters this month, both with iPhone 8. Neither would charge on the Chevrolet vehicle wireless charging pads. However they did work when I tested them on my Samsung wireless pad at my desk. After doing some research online I have concluded that this problem seems to occur with all GM models with the charging pad, not just Chevrolet.
At this time GM does not show iPhone 8 as a compatible or non compatible device on their supported list, we hope this will be updated in the future. Since the iPhone 8 just rolled out GM has not had a chance to test the phone, therefore will not be on the compatibility list as of yet.
The new iPhone 8 and 8S phones use the older 1.1 Qi wireless charging standard developed under the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC); it supports 7.5W (5V/1.5A) wireless charging. GM’s wireless charging feature supports both the Powermat and Qi wireless charging standards. Specifically, the system supports the following wireless charging specifications:
- PMA 1.0 (Powermat)
- WPC 1.0 (Qi)
- WPC 1.1 (Qi)
We have no updates released as of yet by GM.
