Halloween Safe Driving Tips

If your Halloween trip includes plans to a ghoulish gala or a chance to transform into your favorite super hero for the night, Cecil Clark Chevrolet urges everyone to remember to stay safe on the road. Below are a few tips to help keep you safe this Halloween.

Impaired Driving, whether with alcohol or marijuana, will cause loss of coordination and can cloud your judgement. This puts you at heightened risk for an untimely visit to the ER or worse. To avoid this we recommend:

  • Arrange a safe ride for the evening – Plenty of options are available to you, including public transportation, a designated sober driver and rideshare or cab services such as Uber or Lyft. Spending a few extra dollars for a safe ride home is worth it versus the cost of a DUI.
  • Take your time – Our bodies can only process small amounts of alcohol at a time. Pace yourself and take time to grab a bite and some water in between alcoholic beverages.
  • Look after others – If you’re hosting a Halloween party, keep an eye on your guests. You could be responsible if a partygoer drives drunk and causes an accident.

Trick-or-treaters may be visiting your neighborhood, and some can be hard to spot if they’re wearing dark colored costumes. If you are driving at this time, be prepared.

  • Obey the speed limit signs – Stick to the speed limit or below. This gives you more time to react if someone steps out from between cars or any other unexpected spot.
  • Pay close attention to crosswalks – Those who enter a crosswalk, or have a walk symbol at the stoplight, have the right of way. You must yield to them even if they continue walking after the symbol has expired.
  • Keep distractions out of your driver seat – Sending a cute Count Dracula GIF might be fun, but doing so behind the wheel is dangerous. Phones and any other related distractions can cause drivers to miss objects and pedestrians, such as trick or treaters.
